On This Day in Alexandria History — “On Dec. 16, 1766, George Washington was elected a Trustee of the Town of Alexandria. At the time, Washington was a young man of 34 years, but double the age he was when he first help lay out the plan for the city in 1749. Married and owner of the Mount Vernon estate by 1766, Washington was an established and socially prominent planter in Fairfax County, and on paper one of Virginia’s wealthiest citizens. But recognizing the importance of diversification, that year he started switching Mount Vernon’s main cash crop away from the exportation of tobacco to Britain to the production of wheat and other grain crops that could be grown, milled and sold within the American colonies.” [Historic Alexandria]

Fatal Monday Crash Near ALX Under Investigation — “One person has died and three other people were injured this morning (Monday) in a crash involving a taxi, a Metrobus and a van on Richmond Highway in Groveton. Police received multiple calls reporting a crash in the 6300 block of Richmond Highway shortly after 10 a.m., Fairfax County Police Department Capt. Jesse Katzman said in a media update around 1 p.m.” [FFXnow]

Menorah Lighting in Old Town Tonight — A 6-foot menorah lighting and Hanukkah festival will include latkes, hot chocolate, doughnuts, live music and more. On This Day in Alexandria History — “On Dec. 12, 1971, Gerry Bertier, a captain on the undefeated T.C. Williams High School state championship football team, was critically injured in an early morning car crash on North Beauregard Street. The All-American linebacker suffered a spinal cord injury that left him paralyzed below the waist. He later became an effective advocate for people with disabilities and was competitive in sports for people in wheelchairs.” [Historic Alexandria]

Beyer Condemns Trump’s AI Order — “President Trump’s AI order is an attempt to kill responsible safety reforms passed by states, which would create a lawless Wild West environment for AI companies that puts Americans at risk. This is a terrible idea. Tonight: ACPS Facilities Renaming Hearing — An Alexandria City School Board hearing will be held from 5-6 p.m. in the School Board Meeting Room at 1340 Braddock Place and is available via livestream and Zoom. An agenda and further information on the district’s Identity Project 2025 are available on the Alexandria City Public Schools website. Afterward, the board will host an add/delete session for its proposed Capital Improvement Program. [ACPS]

Trash Collection Reminder — “On Thursday, Dec. 11, the City of Alexandria will slide trash collection by one day to Friday, Dec. 12 due to operational changes. Recycling, yard waste, and curbside composting will not be impacted. Residents with trash pickup regularly scheduled on Thursdays should place bins out for collection on Friday, December 12.” [Alexandria T&ES]

On This Day in Alexandria History — “On Dec. 9, 1839, the first lecture program was performed at Alexandria’s newly-built center for adult learning and knowledge, The Lyceum. The Alexandria Lyceum was founded a year earlier by a group of well-educated local men with an interest in improving public educational and cultural opportunities throughout the community. In early 1839, the group joined with the Alexandria Library to construct a new home for both organizations. This historic site has also served as a Civil War hospital ward, a private residence, the Chamber of Commerce, and the Nation’s first Bicentennial Visitor’s Center.” [Historic Alexandria]

Habitat Restoration Pilot Launches at Four Mile Run — “For this pilot program, two sections along the park’s forest edge have been set aside as Habitat Restoration Areas (HRAs)—places where nature will be given space to thrive. The project will use both natural regeneration and hands-on planting to restore native plants, improve wildlife habitat, and strengthen the park’s ecosystem.” [The Zebra]
