A Del Ray restaurant is one of three Virginia eateries to make Yelp’s annual list of the “Top US Restaurants” released earlier this week.
Matt and Tony’s All Day Kitchen + Bar just made the rankings, coming in at No. 100 out of the 100 spots featured.
Matt and Tony’s first opened in 2022, replacing a vacancy at 1501 Mount Vernon Avenue left by Charlie’s on the Avenue two years prior. It serves all-day breakfast and promises “bold, scratch-made American fare.”
“From towering plates of chicken and waffles and unforgettable shrimp and grits to mouthwatering braised ribs — we serve comfort food with personality,” Matt and Tony’s website reads.
It was founded by Matt Sloan and named after his great-grandfather, Anton “Tony” Schabas, an Austrian pastry chef who immigrated to the United States. After that, he worked at the Waldorf Astoria in D.C., where he made rye bread that was reportedly favored by President John F. Kennedy.
The establishment is also known for its Supper Club, a waitlisted dinner program that delivers five-course seasonal tasting menus, available to order with features like beverage add-ons and extra baked goods.
Matt and Tony’s joins two other Virginia spots on the Yelp list: Chay Restaurant in Fairfax County (No. 68) and Fountain Grill in Ashburn (No. 78).
Establishments were selected and ranked by Yelp staff “using a number of factors, including the total volume and ratings of reviews,” according to the list.
