Alexandria facilities remain closed Tuesday as city slides trash collection another day

Waste will not be collected in Alexandria tomorrow (Tuesday) as city offices, courts, facilities, libraries and public schools plan to remain closed another day due to icy, inclement weather.

Trash, recycling and yard waste collection will “slide” by two days as crews continue to remove ice and snow, the City of Alexandria announced shortly after 7 p.m.

The city and region remain under a Cold Weather Advisory until 11 a.m. Tuesday, as the National Weather Service expects very cold wind chills, as low as 5 to 8 degrees below zero. NWS urges residents to use caution traveling, wear warm clothes outside and keep pets indoors “as much as possible.”

As of 7 p.m. Monday, Alexandria’s primary roads are 100% passable, while secondary, intermediate and residential roads still require snow removal. As many as 109 snow removal trucks were roving the city today, Mayor Alyia Gaskins said on social media.

Here are the road conditions in Alexandria as of 7 p.m. Monday. Please continue to avoid travel as road-clearing operations continue. Check the snow report tool to see the latest road conditions: alexandriava.gov/snowreport

Amid the chilly conditions, DASH and DOT Paratransit will each reopen tomorrow with limited service. DOT will operate from 8 a.m.-10 p.m. in the city’s fare-free zones, while DASH will follow a reduced weekend schedule:

DASH: All service will run every 30 minutes with all detours in effect from 8 AM to 10 PM, except the King St. Trolley which will run from 11 AM to 7 PM.

Metrorail will continue to run trains every 15 to 30 minutes, with more services added as conditions improve.

Warming locations at libraries and recreation centers will not be available, but extended 24/7 hours at the city’s Winter Shelter (355-A Mill Road) will continue through 7 a.m. Wednesday.

A deadline has not yet been set for residents to clear sidewalks in accordance with city code, a City of Alexandria spokesperson told ALXnow in a statement this afternoon.

“The City’s primary concern is the safety of our residents. Because conditions are still icy, we remain focused on clearing routes and have not yet set a deadline by which residential sidewalks must be cleared.”

“We encourage residents to clear their sidewalks when they are able to do so safely.”

Waste collection is slated to return on Wednesday, operating on the following schedule.

  • Monday collection will take place on Wednesday, January 28
  • Tuesday collection will take place on Thursday, January 29
  • Wednesday collection will take place on Friday, January 30
  • Thursday collection will take place on Saturday, January 31
