Tomorrow (Tuesday) will be another snow day for Alexandria City Public Schools students, ACPS announced this afternoon.
All schools and offices will close “due to below freezing temperatures this evening and road conditions across the region,” Superintendent Melanie Kay-Wyatt wrote in an announcement. This also means all activities on school grounds are canceled.
ACPS is “planning to resume synchronous instruction” on Wednesday, but this could change if there are power outages or other unforeseen circumstances. Also, the Alexandria City School Board’s public hearing and work session scheduled for Tuesday may take place virtually.
ACPS and the City of Alexandria’s government offices and courts, libraries, trash collection, DASH and paratransit were all closed today due to inclement weather.
As of this morning, Alexandria’s major roads and snow emergency routes had been cleared. A fleet of 109 snow removal trucks are focused on clearing the city’s remaining roads that were covered in snow during last night’s ice, sleet and freezing rain, Mayor Alyia Gaskins said on social media.
“We’re out there, we’re working on it, and we’re trying to make sure that you can get back to work, school and all the places you need to go as soon as possible,” Gaskins said.
A deadline has not yet been set for residents to clear sidewalks in accordance with city code, a City of Alexandria spokesperson told ALXnow in a statement this afternoon.
“The City’s primary concern is the safety of our residents. Because conditions are still icy, we remain focused on clearing routes and have not yet set a deadline by which residential sidewalks must be cleared. We encourage residents to clear their sidewalks when they are able to do so safely.”
The Alexandria Police Department is advising residents to stay home and avoid unnecessary travel.
Kay-Wyatt’s full announcement is below.
Due to below freezing temperatures this evening and road conditions across the region, all Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS) schools and offices will be closed on Tuesday, January 27, 2026.
Please note that due to the school closure, all in-person afternoon and evening activities on ACPS school grounds are also canceled. This includes programming that is provided by community organizations in ACPS facilities or on school grounds, as well as any ACPS athletic, band or other extracurricular activities or community events. Schools will send information to families regarding any school-sponsored make-up days or new event dates.
Also, please check the ACPS website for information regarding the Alexandria City School Board Public Hearing and Work Session scheduled for tomorrow evening which may still take place virtually.
We are planning to resume synchronous instruction on Wednesday, January 28, 2026. However, if conditions change due to power outages or other unforeseen circumstances, we may need to adjust the operational status. Should any changes be necessary, we will communicate updated information as soon as possible.
Families may want to check with their community service provider or Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities regarding any changes to scheduled activities.
All essential personnel, including building engineers, custodians, maintenance shop employees and security staff should contact their direct supervisor for reporting instructions.
