DASH and DOT Paratransit have canceled all services for tomorrow (Monday), according to announcements from both systems this evening.
DASH’s service cancellation is the system’s first in years, it said, and comes as Alexandria’s public schools, libraries, government offices, facilities and trash collection have announced Monday closures and cancellations.
“After carefully evaluating the forecasts, road conditions, and operational risks, we determined that operating service would put our riders, staff, and the broader community at unnecessary risk,” DASH said. “The safety of our riders, staff, and community is always our top priority.”
As of this evening, “all primary and emergency roads in Alexandria are passable,” but icy conditions are expected to worsen overnight, according to Alexandria Transportation and Environmental Services. Residents are urged to avoid travel, if possible, as the city remains under a local emergency until 11:59 p.m. Tuesday.
At least 7 inches of snow fell in Alexandria throughout the past 24 hours, according to a trained spotter report from the National Weather Service. There is a 20% chance of precipitation overnight ahead of Monday’s forecast, which could bring a wind gusts as high as 28 mph and a high near 28 degrees, per NWS.
Another DASH service update is expected to come Monday evening regarding Tuesday service. The bus system said it will continue to monitor weather and road conditions, and “will restore service as soon as it is safe to do so.”
Across the region, limited Metrobus services are expected to resume at 6 a.m. tomorrow, after the system suspended services early at 9:30 p.m. today. Metrorail, meanwhile, will open at 6 a.m. and operate on a Sunday schedule.
