Traffic is backed up on westbound Interstate 495 near Eisenhower Avenue as authorities respond to the scene of a tractor-trailer crash near the Alexandria-Fairfax County border.
The crash occurred when the driver of a tractor-trailer in the right lane “lost control, jack-knifed, and struck an SUV” on westbound I-495 around 4:08 p.m., according to Virginia State Police.
The SUV was pushed off to the left side of the interstate and struck a guardrail, according to VSP. The tractor-trailer driver “was charged with driving too fast for road conditions,” VSP told ALXnow.
No injuries were reported. At least one driver received a check-up from a medic on the scene, according to a responder with Fairfax County Fire and Rescue.
Motorists should expect delays, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation. Live VDOT cameras show a pile up of traffic on I-495 as the south left shoulder, left lane and center lane of traffic have been closed.
The crash remains under investigation by VSP, which has responded to nearly 500 statewide crashes amid Winter Storm Fern.
Authorities encourage motorists to stay off roads as snow removal efforts continue, warning that low temperatures this evening may refreeze roads.
