New Mumbai-inspired restaurant plans debut in Eisenhower East next week

People seeking warmth after this weekend’s impending winter storm can find solace in the slow-cooked curries of a new Indian restaurant opening soon in Eisenhower East.

The Mumbai-inspired Bombay Canteen is planning to “soft open” at 2010 Eisenhower Avenue on Monday, Feb. 2, a spokesperson told ALXnow. An official grand opening is planned for Sunday, Feb. 8.

The new restaurant hopes to deliver “the bold, nostalgic tastes of one of the world’s most dynamic cities to Northern Virginia” with dishes like tawa, curry, vada pav and pav bhaji, according to a press release. It also plans to serve “iconic street-food favorites,” layered chaats and biryanis.

For dessert, Indian sweets like gulab jamun are joined by homemade gelato, available in flavors like mango lassi, rose petal and cardamom.

Chef Nishi Barua has dreamed of opening The Bombay Canteen for 15 years. She first took an interest in the culinary world during her college years in India, and her cooking “reflects nostalgia, resilience, and a profound respect for the everyday foods that define Bombay’s identity.”

Barua is joined in business by restaurateur Asah Sheikh. They both hold personal ties to the restaurant’s namesake place.

“Bombay is a city where food is deeply emotional — it’s tied to memory, family, and place,” Sheikh said. “With The Bombay Canteen, we wanted to recreate that feeling and share the flavors we grew up with in a way that feels both authentic and welcoming.”

Upcoming specials include an $18 thali platter with items like saag paneer, chicken tikka masala, naan, rice and a dessert. It’s also available in a vegetarian option.

The Bombay Canteen plans to be open daily. Its hours are 11 a.m.-3 p.m. for lunch and 5-11 p.m. for dinner.
