One lane reopened after water main break on Duke Street prompted closures

One westbound lane has reopened near 5005 Duke Street after Alexandria staff and police responded overnight to a water main break in the area.

Virginia American Water is currently responding to the main break, which the Alexandria Police Department reported on Facebook shortly after 11 p.m. yesterday (Monday). The break prompted APD to close westbound lanes at the scene, and as of 12:45 a.m. today (Tuesday), one lane had been reopened.

Repairs are expected to be completed by 5 p.m. today, a spokesperson for Virginia American Water told ALXnow this morning.

“Virginia American Water is responding to a break on a 12” main near 5005 Duke St,” the spokesperson wrote. “Only three customers will have their service impacted while repairs are being made.”

Main breaks are more likely to occur during cold and freezing weather. As crews respond, the utility encourages passersby to use caution in the area.
