On This Day in Alexandria History — “On Jan. 14, 1962, the new Alexandria Hospital on Seminary Road was officially dedicated. Vice-President Lyndon B. Johnson cut the ribbon before a crowd of more than 5,000. The new facility cost around $3.7 million to build.” [Historic Alexandria]

Bennett-Parker Wins Dem Primary — “Del. Elizabeth Bennett-Parker (D-5) has been declared the winner in a firehouse primary for Virginia’s 39th District Senate seat, defeating three opponents with 70.6% of the 4,647 ballots cast … ADC released results just before 2:30 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 14.” [ALXnow]

On This Day in Alexandria History — “On Jan. 13, 1874, a fire broke at the Carlyle House. The fire was concentrated on the roof near a chimney but firefighters extinguished it before any serious damage occurred. After construction of a large hotel in front of the 18th century home built for Alexandria founder John Carlyle on N. Fairfax Street, the once elegant structure was neglected and often used as a transient boarding house, resulting in unsafe conditions.” [Historic Alexandria]

Firehouse Primary Voting Is Today — The primary will be held from 8:30 a.m.-7 p.m. Tuesday, according to the Alexandria Democratic Committee — less than a week out from [Sen. Adam] Ebbin’s Jan. 7 announcement.” Voting is available at the Charles E. Beatley, Jr. Central Library and Charles Houston Recreation Center in Alexandria, the Aurora Hills Library in Arlington and  John Calvin Presbyterian Church in Annandale. [ALXnow]

On This Day in Alexandria History — “On Jan. 12, 1864 the Clerk of the Alexandria Common Council was directed to notify the Telegraph Company whose wires and poles already traversed King Street, that the telegraph lines must be placed in a direct line with the street curb within thirty days.” [Historic Alexandria]

On This Day in Alexandria History — “On Jan. 9, 1951, Alexandria officials announced the Alexandria National Guard armory on S. Royal Street had been converted into a recreation center for both servicemen and Alexandria residents. Renovations to the building included game rooms, a photographic darkroom and an indoor gym.” [Historic Alexandria]

NoVA Reports 8.2K in Job Losses — “Northern Virginia lost 8,200 jobs as the commonwealth shed tens of thousands of federal workers between November 2024 and November 2025, new data shows. Non-farm employment in Northern Virginia was down 0.5% as of November, according to data that the Virginia Department of Workforce Development and Advancement reported Wednesday. The commonwealth as a whole, meanwhile, had lost 22,400 federal jobs year-over-year — an 11.5% decrease.” [ARLnow]

Adam Ebbin (D-39) announced that he will be resigning to join Governor-elect Abigail Spanberger’s administration … Soon after Ebbin’s announcement, Del. Elizabeth Bennett-Parker (D-5) and former Del. Mark Levine (D-45) announced their intention to run for Ebbin’s seat. Additionally, Alexandria City Councilman R. On This Day in Alexandria History — “On Jan. 7, 2000, a time capsule was buried at the soon to be opened Beatley Library. Organized by the Alexandria Archaeological Commission, the time capsule project was part of Alexandria’s 250th Anniversary celebration in 1999. A stone excavated from the Alexandria Canal Tide Lock site and carved by master mason Raymond Cannetti marks the burial site.” [Historic Alexandria]
