Early voting begins Saturday in Alexandria as registration deadline approaches

Deadlines are approaching for voter registration and mail-in ballot requests to participate in the Feb. 10 special election.

Early in-person voting kicks off this Saturday at the Office of Voter Registration and Elections (132 N. Royal Street, Suite 100). By-mail ballot requests must be received by the office by 5 p.m. this Friday, Jan. 30, while voter registration and updates must be completed by Tuesday, Feb. 3.

Ballots will include special election races for State Senate in the 39th District and a House of Delegates seat in the 5th District, as Sen. Adam Ebbin and Del. Elizabeth-Bennett Parker depart their roles.

Democrat Bennett-Parker will face Republican Julie Robben Lineberry for State Senate, while Democrat and departing City Councilman R. Kirk McPike will face Republican Mason Butler for House of Delegates.

Voters can check their registration on the state’s Department of Elections website, by emailing [email protected] or by calling the Office of Voter Registration & Elections at 703-746-4050.

By-mail ballot applications can be accessed the following ways, according to the City.

  • Visit vote.elections.virginia.gov to submit an application online.
  • Downloading the application available on the City’s Elections webpage (which can be submitted by mail or email.)
  • Call Voter Registration & Elections at 703.746.4050 to request that an application is mailed to you. Please consider mail delivery time when you call. 

Registration must be completed in-person at the Office of Voter Registration and Elections by 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 3, or online by midnight that day. Print applications sent to the Office must be postmarked on or before Feb. 3.

New or transferred registrants should expect voter information letters mailed within a week of their registration date.

Same-day registration will open after Feb. 3. Those who vote with same-day registration are required to participate in-person and cast a provisional ballot.

In-person early voting

The in-person early voting period begins Saturday and will last through 5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 7. A full schedule of dates and hours from the City of Alexandria is available, below.

  • Saturday, Jan. 31, 8 a.m.-5 p.m.*
  • Sunday, Feb. 1, 11 a.m.-3 p.m.
  • Monday, Feb. 2, 8 a.m.-5 p.m.
  • Tuesday, Feb. 3, 8 a.m.-7 p.m.
  • Wednesday, Feb. 4, 8 a.m.-5 p.m.
  • Thursday, Feb. 5, 8 a.m.-7 p.m.
  • Friday, Feb. 6, 8 a.m.-5 p.m.
  • Saturday, Feb. 7, 8 a.m.-5 p.m.*

*The Old Town Farmer’s Market will be open in Tavern Square, next to our building, until noon. Voter parking will be located along Cameron Street. though a curbside voter spot will still be reserved in front of our office on N Royal Street.

People voting by mail must send completed ballots to the Office of Voter Registration & Elections by 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 10, or have mail postmarked by that date and received in the office by noon Friday, Feb. 13.

Voters can find ballot drop boxes at all polling places from 6 a.m.-7 p.m. on Feb. 10. Another drop box is available all day at the Office of Voter Registration & Elections through 7 p.m. Feb. 10.
