Alexandria Republicans announce state Senate candidate for February special election

The Alexandria Republican City Committee has selected a candidate to compete in February’s special election to replace Sen. Adam Ebbin (D).

Realtor Julie Robben Lineberry will serve as the party’s candidate in the 39th Senate District, according to a mass email sent this morning (Tuesday) by Arlington GOP Chair Matthew Hurtt.

Lineberry was the sole applicant for the now-canceled special party canvassing event, which would have happened tonight if she faced opposition. In February, Lineberry will face off against the winner of tonight’s Democratic firehouse primary.

“I couldn’t sit back and let the high-jinx going on with this election go uncontested,” Lineberry said in a statement released by the ARCC on Wednesday. “It is time to draw the line. From gerrymandering to election manipulation, the political machine is undermining democracy for our citizens.”

The candidate “knows the district well,” ARCC Chairman Chris Howell said Tuesday in a statement distributed by Hurtt.

“She is a long-time Alexandria resident and has been helping others find their homes in Alexandria, Arlington, and Fairfax for more than 40 years. Her extensive community involvement includes leading Girl Scout troops, service units, associations, and trainer positions;  TWIG (Inova Alexandria Hospital Auxiliary); and civic associations as well as serving 10 years on the Alexandria Electoral Board.”

In the Arlington GOP’s message, Hurtt said Lineberry is “exactly the kind of candidate Republicans must recruit in Northern Virginia.”

“She has deep ties to the community, an expansive understanding of the local economy through her experience in real estate, and a heart for civic and community service,” Hurtt wrote.

The Senate seat, however, is almost certain to remain blue, given that 76.2% of the district’s voters supported Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election, according to the Virginia Public Access Project.

Voting in the Democratic firehouse primary remains until 7 p.m. today for voters in the 39th Senate District, which includes Alexandria, Crystal City and Pentagon City in Arlington County and Bailey’s Crossroads and Seven Corners in Fairfax County.

Polling is taking place at the following locations.

The election has been scheduled for Feb. 10.
