On This Day in Alexandria History — “On January 29, 1947, just a year after establishing America’s third regulated historic district, in what would become known as “Old Town”, the Alexandria City Council directed that a new ordinance be prepared covering public signs in the City. In the years after World War II signs across the city began to become larger and larger to attract the attention of the increasingly motorized population driving through the city.” [Historic Alexandria]

Ceremony Remembers 67 Killed In Midair Collision — “Families of the 67 people who died in an aircraft collision last January gathered on Wednesday evening to mark the first anniversary, just one day after investigators testified about years of ignored warnings and near-misses.” [ABC]

NoVA Lawmaker Proposes Bills Limiting ICE — “In Richmond, state Sen. Saddam Azlan Salim is pushing three pieces of legislation that he says will keep ‘the chaos, lawlessness, and violence that we have seen perpetrated against Minnesotans from coming to Virginia.’ … Each of Salim’s bills would place state-level restrictions on certain actions by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers, who have reportedly increased activities in Fairfax County but haven’t been deployed at the level seen in Minneapolis, D.C., Portland and other cities.” [FFXnow]

Amazon Cuts Jobs, Planning More AI Use — “Amazon is slashing about 16,000 corporate jobs in the second round of mass layoffs for the ecommerce company in three months. The tech giant has said it plans to use generative artificial intelligence to replace corporate workers. It has also been reducing a workforce that swelled during the pandemic.” [AP, ARLnow]

Meteorologists Watch For ‘Bomb Cyclone’ — “Deep cold is forecast to stick around at least into the first week of February. Meteorologists are also watching what could become a ‘bomb cyclone’ — a quickly intensifying storm that’s a winter version of a hurricane — forming off the Carolinas Friday night into Saturday.” [AP, ARLnow]
