UPDATED: Van Dorn Street reopened at scene of Sunday snowplow crash near Fairfax border

Southbound S. Van Dorn Street at Eisenhower Avenue has been reopened to traffic following a snowplow crash yesterday morning (Sunday).

A snowplow driver with the Virginia Department of Transportation was trapped inside their overturned vehicle at the Fairfax County border after crashing at S. Van Dorn Street and Eisenhower Avenue shortly after 11 a.m. Sunday.

Virginia State Police are leading the crash investigation, with assistance from APD and the Fairfax County Police Department, according to FCPD. No injuries were reported at the scene.

The crash had damaged power lines and prompted first responders to close the roads, according to dispatches in Alexandria and Fairfax County.

“Speaking to drivers, it’s just really slippery here on South Van Dorn. The truck lost control, slid out, crashed into a pole,” a responder from the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department said on the scanner at 11:11 a.m. “There does not appear to be any injuries.”

As of 2:40 p.m. Sunday, southbound traffic leaving Alexandria at Eisenhower and Van Dorn was still blocked as authorities responded to the scene, APD Communications Manager Tracy Walker told ALXnow. Motorists were asked to avoid the area and take alternate routes.

The Virginia Department of Transportation reported after 11:30 a.m. that neighboring lanes had reopened after wires were removed from the road.

Snowplows have been roving the city since Saturday night and operated at Level 3 conditions on Sunday morning — the city’s most severe winter storm classification. The response prompts crews to first make roads passable for emergency vehicles only.

“For your safety and the safety of first responders, please avoid travel unless absolutely necessary,” APD wrote on Facebook. “If you must be on the road, reduce speed, increase following distance, and allow extra time.”

The weather has prompted Alexandria City Public Schools to close for tomorrow (Monday), and the city remains under local emergency status until 11:59 p.m. Tuesday.
