Alexandria’s snow and ice removal teams are out in the city this morning (Sunday) following heavy overnight snowfall from Winter Storm Fern.
The city is advising residents to limit travel as crews travel to remove several inches of snowfall — at least 5.5 inches in Alexandria as of 8:25 a.m., according to trained spotters with the National Weather Service.
Per crews’ dispatches, snow removal teams are following “Level 3” conditions under the city’s Winter Weather Emergency System — a response for expected “significant snow accumulations, ice, or blizzard conditions.” According to the city:
Significant snow accumulations, ice, or blizzard conditions are expected; roads are closed to non-emergency vehicles. Roads will be made passable for emergency vehicles only, and snow removal operations will continue around the clock with the goal of bringing roadway conditions to Level 2.

Due to the conditions, Alexandria is under local emergency status until 11:59 p.m. Tuesday, and parking remains prohibited on the city’s emergency snow removal routes.
“Help keep streets and our teams as safe as possible by limiting nonessential travel and exercising caution when driving and walking around the city,” Transportation and Environmental Services wrote on Facebook this morning.
Snow and sleet are expected to continue through early Monday, leading to hazardous travel conditions. The city advises residents to “prepare for difficult road conditions and extremely cold temperatures.”
DOT, DASH updates
Due to the forecast, all DASH service “will run hourly on detours” through 10 p.m. today, with the exception of the King Street Trolley, which will remain in service from 11 a.m.-7 p.m. The bus system’s customer service will be available through 5 p.m. today, and future updates can be found on DASH’s Alerts page.
Additionally, effective 4:30 a.m. tomorrow (Monday) through 2 a.m. Tuesday, Alexandria’s DOT Paratransit will only operate within ADA-mandated, fare-free service areas. DOT’s call center will be closed today, but riders may still manage trips on the mobile app or voice AI assistant, according to the city.
