CVS Pharmacy shutters in Potomac Yard, leaving a dozen remaining Alexandria locations

CVS Pharmacy has closed a location in Potomac Yard, bringing the pharmacy’s locations within the City of Alexandria to 12.

CVS’ last day at 2601 Richmond Highway was Jan. 21, CVS spokesperson Roslyn Guarino confirmed to ALXnow. Prescriptions from the pharmacy have been transferred to the CVS Pharmacy at 415 E. Monroe Avenue in Del Ray, and employees were offered similar roles within the company.

Customers can choose to send their prescriptions to another location of their choice, according to CVS. The next closest location is the CVS inside Target at the Potomac Yard Shopping Center (3101 Richmond Highway).

“Maintaining access to pharmacy services in the communities we serve is an important factor we consider when making store closure decisions,” Guarino said. “Other factors include local market dynamics, population shifts, a community’s store density, and ensuring there are other geographic access points to meet the needs of the community.”

Just a dozen locations remain in the city, with six others in the Alexandria area of Fairfax County.

Potomac Yard is also affected by Amazon’s recently announced plans to close all Amazon Fresh locations, while converting some into Whole Foods Markets.

The location at the Potomac Yard Shopping Center had just opened about a year and a half ago. Details on which locations will be converted are still being finalized, a spokesperson said.
