Cafe in Del Ray makes Eater DC list of ’16 Best Coffee Shops Around D.C.’

Swing’s Coffee is one of the best coffee shops in the D.C. area, according to one ranking.

A new list from Eater DC lists the cafe in the top 16 coffee shops in the area, highlighting “the best drip java, pour-overs, and lattes in town.” The coffeehouse with historic local roots has two downtown D.C. shops and a flagship Del Ray roastery at 501 E. Monroe Avenue.

Swing’s hosts free “cupping” labs and offers growler refills for cold brew. It serves up drip coffee, pour-over and classic espresso beverages as well as a variety of baked goods.

The roastery first opened in 2013, three years before the business would celebrate 100 years in the D.C. area. It was first founded by Michael and son Edward Swing in 1916 in D.C.

Today, batches of Swing’s are roasted daily in Alexandria using small-batch methods “with a modern approach that highlights each bean’s natural character.”

The business places an emphasis on ethical sourcing and sustainability, working “hand-in-hand with producers who share our values, sourcing green coffee through importers who invest in traceable, sustainable supply chains,” according to Swing’s website.

“From composting programs to reusable packaging and fair-wage partnerships, we strive to make decisions that sustain both people and the environment,” Swing’s wrote. “Because great coffee should do good at every level.”

The coffee bar is open in Del Ray from 7 a.m.-4 p.m. on weekdays and 8 a.m.-3 p.m. on weekends. The roastery is open from 7:30 a.m.-4 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and 7:30 a.m.-2 p.m. Friday.
