Empty Bowls Alexandria returns next month amid increased demand for services

The annual Empty Bowls Alexandria event is returning next month as host ALIVE! says demands for food, housing and emergency financial assistance are on the rise.

In its ninth year, the historically sold-out event brings local restaurants and artisans together to fundraise for the nonprofit’s efforts to address food and housing insecurity. The event comes as ALIVE! has weathered the region’s economic losses over the past year, with requests for support up roughly 30% since the fall, spokesperson Grace Terlinden told ALXnow.

This winter, the nonprofit has experienced increased needs across the board for food, housing and emergency financial assistance, she said. A food drive for 2026 has raised over 15,000 meals so far — 30% of a 50,000-meal goal.

“The need in Alexandria continues to grow and shift,” Terlinden said. “Rising food costs, housing instability, and unexpected expenses are pushing more families and individuals to seek assistance — many of whom have never needed help before.”

The event will take place from 7-9 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 28, at Beth El Hebrew Congregation (3830 Seminary Road). Attendees can expect to partake in soups and dishes from local restaurants which are still being confirmed. In the past, restaurant partners have included eateries like Del Ray Cafe, Beeliner Diner and Los Tios Grill.

“The goal is to showcase Alexandria’s vibrant food community while coming together around a shared commitment to addressing hunger locally,” Terlinden said.

Handcrafted bowls will be provided by the Alexandria Clay Co-Op and other local artisans. The event will also feature a 50/50 raffle and silent auction with themed gift baskets and items from local businesses.

Tickets are currently on sale for $95 each, with just over 100 remaining, Terlinden said.

The event is led by honorary chairs from various business and restaurant groups across Alexandria and is sponsored by the Jen Walker Team.
