Students and teachers at Alexandria City Public Schools will continue with synchronous virtual learning tomorrow (Thursday).
ACPS facilities will continue to remain closed, Superintendent Melanie Kay-Wyatt announced this afternoon. The district will also continue to distribute lunches free of charge to all kids under 18 at two school locations, in accordance with the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s meal waiver program.
Meals will be available to-go at these schools from 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.
- Alexandria City High School, 3330 King Street – Door #34
- Charles Barrett Elementary School, 1115 Martha Custis Drive – Main Entrance
Student presence is requested at the time of meal pickup, according to ACPS.
Similar to today’s operations, families are encouraged to check students’ Canvas or Clever accounts no later than 8 a.m. tomorrow for details about scheduling. Attendance will also be taken through these platforms.
In the announcement, Kay-Wyatt shared the following message about the ongoing challenges posed by snow and ice conditions.
School Reopening Update
The recent snow and ice storm has created significant challenges in preparing our schools and facilities to safely welcome students and staff. Essential building operations, including facility and bus inspections, pathway clearing and safety protocol verification, require additional time to be completed. Our teams are actively working to address these conditions, and we will continue to assess the situation throughout the week.
As we make operational decisions, we remain focused on the safety of both students and staff. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we take the necessary steps to ensure a safe return to school. Additional updates will be shared as soon as more information becomes available.
Snow removal crews continued to make progress on school zones today, and the city’s Snow Report tool is back in operation after experiencing technical difficulties.
According to a recent City of Alexandria announcement, primary and secondary roads are 100% passable, and residential routes are 57% passable.
“Crews are continuing plowing and treatment on residential routes and will address refreeze conditions,” according to the City. “Once all roads are treated and passable, crews will begin widening intersections, travel lanes, parking lanes, bike lanes, and trails.”
More school closure details are available on the ACPS website.
