On This Day in Alexandria History — “On March 10, 1965 construction began to implement the controversial Gadsby’s Urban Renewal Project, in the heart of downtown Alexandria. approved by City Council in a close 4-3 vote. In the early 1960’s “urban renewal” in the United States focused largely on the demolition and reconstruction of deteriorated downtown areas, rather than the restoration of historic buildings to revitalize city centers, a concept that emerged a decade later. In Alexandria, renewal was originally proposed for a twelve block area further west along King Street, but ultimately moved east, centered on the area around Gadsby’s Tavern, City Hall and Market Square.” [Historic Alexandria]

AG Condemns Anti-Redistricting Mailers — “A political action committee opposing Virginia’s April 21 redistricting referendum is facing sharp criticism after sending mailers to voters over the weekend that invoke imagery and language from the civil rights movement — a tactic voting rights advocates and state officials say distorts history and risks misleading voters. The mailers, distributed by a group called Democracy and Justice PAC, led by former GOP Delegate A.C. Cordoza, feature black-and-white imagery reminiscent of 1960s civil rights demonstrations … Virginia Attorney General Jay Jones, the state’s first Black attorney general, said the mailers draw on a painful chapter of American history that should not be used as a political tool.” [Virginia Mercury]

On This Day in Alexandria History — “On March 9, 1855, stockholders for a new cemetery held a meeting to elect a president and board of directors. The location of the new cemetery, which was later named Ivy Hill, was described in the Alexandria Gazette as a ‘most beautiful one.'” [Historic Alexandria]

‘Empty Bowls’ Exceeds $75K Goal — “A total of 214 attendees packed the hall February 28, raising more than $81,000 through ticket sales, sponsorships, and silent auction. The amount surged past the organization’s $75,000 goal. Empty Bowls is a global movement that raises money for non-profits working to fight hunger.  It is ALIVE!’s signature fundraiser, along with the StepALIVE! Walkathon in October.” [The Zebra]

Ballyshaners Parade Weekend Is Here — “The Ballyshaners‘ 43rd annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade is expected to draw thousands of spectators to celebrate alongside a lineup of performers and community organizers. Local dignitaries plan to kick off festivities at noon Saturday, March 7, with the parade stepping off at 12:30 p.m.” [ALXnow]

On This Day in Alexandria History — “On March 4, 1827, St. Mary’s Catholic Church, the oldest Catholic parish in Virginia, was officially consecrated. The cornerstone had been set the summer before and when completed, the church building measured 45 feet by 60 feet. The church is said to have been started in 1795 when Colonel John Fitzgerald, a close friend and associate of George Washington, and an early mayor of Alexandria, took up a collection to fund construction of a small chapel at the southern end of South Washington Street, now the site of St. Mary’s Cemetery, where the street ended at the edge of Great Hunting Creek.” [Historic Alexandria]

AEDP Launching ‘Tech Accelerator’ — “The Alexandria Economic Development Partnership is set establish its first tech accelerator to shore up the city’s standing in the increasingly competitive Northern Virginia technology sector. Marian Marquez, senior vice president at AEDP, told [WBJ] a request for proposals seeking candidates to run an accelerator — similar to a business consultancy service for early-stage companies — is expected to open on Wednesday.” [WBJ]
