ACPS plans to make April election day a student holiday

The Alexandria City School Board is expected to approve a calendar revision that would make Virginia’s April 21 election date a student holiday.

Alexandria City Public Schools has recommended the School Board approve the item during tonight’s meeting (Thursday), as voters will be in school-based polling locations on Election Day.

The proposed change would give students a day off on Tuesday, April 21, while creating a new teacher and staff work day “in order to ensure the safety of students as well as minimize disruption to the educational environment.”

Several ACPS schools function as polling locations, including Alexandria City High School, George Washington Middle School, Naomi L. Brooks Elementary, James K. Polk Elementary School, Douglas MacArthur Elementary School, Ferdinand T. Day School, John Adams Elementary School, Samuel W. Tucker Elementary School and Lyles-Crouch Traditional Academy, where the City Hall precinct has relocated due to ongoing renovations.

In Alexandria, voters will head to the polls from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. on April 21 to vote on a statewide redistricting referendum, in addition to City Council’s special election. Three candidates are running for the City Council seat vacated by new Del. R. Kirk McPike: Democrat Sandy Marks, independent and former Republican Councilman Frank Fannon, and independent Alison Virginia O’Connell.

All three candidates participated in a forum last night hosted by the West End Business Association, moderated by ALXnow.
