Superintendent Melanie Kay-Wyatt will resign on Oct. 1, the Alexandria City School Board announced Thursday night.
The announcement was made during Thursday night’s School Board meeting. Kay-Wyatt will continue in the role into the new school year as new school attendance boundaries are implemented at Alexandria City Public Schools.
Kay-Wyatt, formerly the human resources chief at ACPS, has served as superintendent since 2022. She stepped into the interim role when former Superintendent Gregory Hutchings Jr. resigned, and the appointment became permanent in 2023.
“It has been a privilege to serve the students, staff, families, and community of Alexandria,” Kay-Wyatt said. “I am deeply grateful for the opportunity I had to lead this school division and to work alongside so many dedicated educators, leaders, and supporters of public education.”
According to an ACPS release, Kay-Wyatt is credited with leading the school division through the openings of the new Douglas MacArthur Elementary School and Alexandria City High School’s Minnie Howard Campus and conversion of 1703 N. Beauregard Street into a swing space for George Mason Elementary School during its construction. The superintendent also oversaw academic recovery efforts after the COVID-19 pandemic, a collective bargaining process for staff, enhanced school safety measures, the school boundary redistricting process, the introduction of career academies at Alexandria City High School, and the division’s 2025-2030 Strategic Plan.
“Dr. Melanie Kay-Wyatt has led Alexandria City Public Schools with heart, strength, and an unwavering commitment to our students, staff, and families,” School Board Chair Michelle Rief said in a statement. “During her time as superintendent, she has helped guide our school division through periods of both progress and complexity, always centering the needs of students and working to strengthen our schools.”
The School Board is immediately beginning the process of selecting the next superintendent. A search firm will be sought to conduct the process. An interim superintendent may be considered if continuity of leadership is needed.
More information about the superintendent search process will be shared as it moves forward.
