ACPS moving out of George Mason Elementary School and into swing space for 2 years

With a years-long renovation breaking ground this summer, the move-out dates have been set for staff at George Mason Elementary School (2601 Cameron Mills Road).

Staff began packing up in early May, according to ACPS, and the main move, a 3.5-mile relocation to the building at 1703 N. Beauregard Street, is scheduled for June 16-20. The newly renovated George Mason Elementary is planned to reopen for students in August 2027.

“The goal is to ensure a smooth transition, acknowledging the inherent challenges of moving an entire school, to prepare GMES for an exciting 2025-26 school year in their temporary home,” ACPS staff said in an update that will be presented to the School Board on Thursday (June 12). “Regular meetings with various stakeholders, including school leadership, departments, and moving contractors, have established detailed protocols for relocating educational materials and furniture.”

City Council approved the overhaul of George Mason Elementary School last month.

ACPS also plans to use 1703 N. Beauregard Street as a swing space for the Cora Kelly Elementary School modernization, which will follow this project.

These signatures are of Dragons who first roamed these halls as kindergartners in 2012, before most of our current fifth graders were even born! 🐉 • The @georgemasonelementaryschool Dragons of @alexcitytitans Class of 2025 left their mark *literally* by signing the halls that shaped their earliest school days. These halls and building will soon be torn down, but their legacy remains. • As our current Dragons, teachers, and families prepare to leave this building for the last time, we’ll walk past these signatures with pride, gratitude, and hope, reminded of all the ways this school has helped build not just students, but a wonderful community.
