The Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS) School Board held a public hearing on Monday, April 21, on the draft 2025-2030 Strategic Plan.
Despite encouraging the community to provide a final round of feedback on the plan, no community members signed up to speak, resulting in just a four-minute hearing.
Board Chair Michelle Rief opened and closed the hearing quickly, confirming there were no scheduled public comments. However, board member Tim Beatty shared feedback from an unnamed community member. The suggestion was to include specific growth percentages for SOL pass rates in math and reading, similar to other indicators in the plan.
Beatty also proposed tapping into the knowledge of former school board members for long-term planning efforts like the strategic plan, noting that their historical insight could be valuable.
Superintendent Dr. Melanie Kay-Wyatt addressed Beatty’s comments, explaining that the district conducts extensive outreach and plans to adjust metrics based on the new state accountability system. She mentioned an upcoming accountability webinar to help the community understand changes to SOL metrics and other growth indicators.
According to ACPS, the 2025–30 Strategic Plan outlines:
-
A refreshed mission and vision centered on preparing each student to thrive in college, career and life.
-
Core values with defined everyday practices and behaviors that will help bring the strategic plan to life.
-
Five strategic goal areas focused on safe environments, academic excellence, staff development, community trust and postsecondary readiness. Each goal has key performance indicators (KPIs) to track progress.
-
Strategies and priority actions within each goal that are aligned to daily work across the division—from classrooms to central office.
The School Board is set to vote on the final version of the 2025-2030 Strategic Plan at its May 8 meeting.
