GW Parkway resurfacing to begin between Arlington and Alexandria

UPDATE at 11 a.m. — NPS has provided an estimate of when resurfacing work will begin in Alexandria.

Resurfacing on sections of the George Washington Memorial Parkway between Arlington and Alexandria will begin this week, the National Park Service says.

Sections of the GW Parkway are being resurfaced between Spout Run Parkway and Interstate 395 in Arlington and between Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport and First Street in Alexandria. Lane closures will occur when crews are doing milling and paving work during the day, overnight and on weekends.

Work will continue — weather permitting — through mid-June.

According to NPS, the sections of the road being repaved have deteriorated over time, and repairs will seek to prevent further damage and make the roadway smoother for drivers. Crews will remove the top layer of the worn asphalt in both directions and pave it with fresh asphalt.

Crews will start resurfacing on the section of the GW Parkway between Spout Run Parkway and Interstate 395. An NPS spokesperson told ALXnow that phase is expected to be completed in early to mid-May, depending on weather and other factors. The section between Reagan National Airport and Alexandria will start afterward and will take another six weeks to finish.

NPS may also close ramps on the GW Parkway during the road work and will notify commuters before the closures start.

Lane closures during the early resurfacing work are:

Morning rush hour on weekdays (5:30-9:30 a.m.): Drivers will have two southbound lanes toward Washington, D.C., and one northbound lane.

Evening rush hour on weekdays (2:45-7:15 p.m.): Drivers will have two northbound lanes and one southbound lane toward Washington, D.C.

Midday on weekdays (9:30 a.m. to 2:45 p.m.), overnight (7:15 p.m. to 5:30 a.m.), and on weekends: Drivers will have one lane open in each direction.
