There’s extensive redevelopment in the works along Beauregard Street, a major route through the city’s West End.

At the tail end of the Beauregard Design Advisory Committee meeting late last month — where BDAC reviewed a proposal to scale down a proposed townhouse development — Maya Contreras, the principal planner for West End new development, laid out a roadmap for what’s ahead for the surrounding areas.

Homicide suspect Ibrahim Bouaichi has died as a result of self-inflicted gunshot wounds that left him in the hospital since Wednesday, Aug. 5.

Bouaichi was wanted for the July 29 murder of Karla Elizabeth Dominguez Gonzalez, whom he allegedly killed after he was released on bond awaiting trial for rape charges against her.

Alexandria activists are planning another protest at the home of acting Department of Homeland Security Secretary Chad Wolf this Sunday.

In an email, activists said to meet at the intersection of Preston Road and Valley Drive on Sunday, Aug. 9, at 10 a.m. for a rally outside the acting secretary’s home along the northern border between Arlington and Alexandria. The protest is planned to oppose Operation Legend, ICE abuses, and DACA restrictions and organizers asked participants to wear masks, bring signs and water.

Alexandria Mayor Justin Wilson warned that this November’s election could look very different from elections in the past, and encouraged residents to request mail-in ballots if possible.

“We absolutely encourage residents to vote by mail if they can or take advantage of some of the in-person absentee voting that will become available,” Wilson said in a town hall meeting last night. “This is the first election in Virginia history where no excuse is required for absentee balloting.  You can say you would like a mail ballot and you can get one.”

(Updated 4:15 p.m.) After a week with two flood warnings, the city is reminding residents that a program is available for the city to cover half the costs for sewer backflow prevention — a source of much of the city’s flooding problems.

The Backflow Preventer (BFP) Assistance Program reimburses homeowners for up to 50% of the costs of installing a BFP device by a licensed plumbing contractor for up to a maximum of $2,000.

It’s rare for Development attorney Ken Wire to admit that a previously approved project needs less density and more open space, but Upland Park is an exception, he recently told the Beauregard Design Advisory Committee (BDAC).

Developer Hekemian & Co. came to the BDAC late last month to discuss some significant changes planned to a proposed development along Seminary Road in the West End.

New details are emerging on developer CRC Cos.’ plans to turn a series of single-family homes across the street from the Braddock Metro station into a mixed-use development called Braddock West, as first reported by the Washington Business Journal.

The new development is proposed to be seven stories tall, overshadowing the existing Andrew Adkins housing which is also slated for eventual redevelopment. The project is slated to include 174 residential units, with 8-12 committed affordable units.

Restaurant chain Silver Diner is planning to open its West End location (4630 King Street) next Wednesday, but it could be a while later before the highly anticipated Harris Teeter in the same building opens.

Staff at Array Apartments in the same building said that an update they received said that the Harris Teeter would not be opening until sometime next year. An earlier press release cited early 2021, but the staff at Array said there’s no specific information yet on when.

An unnamed alleyway through a Braddock neighborhood could soon be named after recently-retired Alexandria Judge Nolan Dawkins, the first Black judge in the city’s history.

The alley runs between the 400 blocks of N. West and N. Peyton streets, where Dawkins grew up. Kimberly Dawkins, Judge Nolan Dawkins’ daughter, said the renaming was originally intended to be a surprise (sorry) celebration for the retired judge.
