Alexandria Health Department Holding COVID-19 Vaccine Clinic for High-Risk Groups — “The Alexandria Health Department (AHD) is currently registering essential employees for a COVID-19 vaccine clinic. The clinic is also open to residents with “underlying medical conditions and those over 65.” [Zebra]

New 12-Acre Park Coming to Mount Vernon Area of Fairfax — “By the end of this year, a new 12-acre park will open at the new North Hill development site. At a virtual meeting Wednesday evening, members of the Fairfax County Park Authority (FCPA) presented details on North Hill park.” [Alexandria Living Magazine]

ARHA Reopening Public Housing Waitlist Next Week

The Alexandria Redevelopment & Housing Authority (ARHA) is opening the Housing Choice Voucher (Section 8) and Public Housing waitlists, according to a press release.

From Jan. 11-Jan. 13, Alexandrians can submit applications for public housing. due to the pandemic, ARHA will only accept applications electronically. Exceptions can be made for those who are disabled and unable to fill out applications electronically.

St. Stephen’s and St. Agnes School Submits Plans for New Expansion

After the planned rebuilding of St. Andrews United Methodist Church, St. Stephen’s and St. Agnes School (1000 St. Stephens Road) has submitted plans to expand the private school with new buildings and parking.

The new plan will also add a total of 20 parking spaces to the school to accommodate the student body increase. The new development will include temporary trailers for students while construction is underway.

American Physical Therapy Association to Open Next Week at Potomac Yard

(Updated 4:50 p.m.) The American Physical Therapy Association‘s (APTA) move to Potomac Yard is scheduled to be completed next week with a ribbon-cutting and grand opening.

The new headquarters at 3030 Potomac Avenue has been in the works since 2018 and was one of the early moves to relocate closer to the Potomac Yard Metro station. The ribbon cutting is scheduled — virtually — for Friday, Jan. 15 at 9:30-10:30 a.m and can be viewed on Facebook, YouTube and Twitter.

Alexandria Police Make Arrests in ‘OfferUp’ Car Theft Investigation

Two men have been arrested after allegedly trying to resell stolen cars and nearly running over an Alexandria Police officer.

Michael Daugherty, an 18-year-old resident of Washington, D.C., and a 20-year-old man from Prince George’s County, Maryland, were arrested on Dec. 7 after allegedly fleeing the Yasini Auto Gallery near the King Street-Old Town Metro station in a stolen white Toyota RAV4.

Goldy the Champion Napper is Up for Adoption with the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria

Goldy, a 12-year-old orange tabby, likes nothing more than to take a nap in the company of friendly people, and he’s up for adoption with the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria.

“Goldy’s new year’s resolution is to eat more food,” AWLA spokesperson Gina Hardter told ALXnow. “This gentleman loves all kinds of food, and he hopes you’ll help him with his new year’s goals by providing him treats whenever he meows for them.”

Old Town Restaurant Ada’s on the River to Open Next Week

Alexandria’s newest waterfront restaurant has officially targeted Thursday, Jan. 14 as its opening.

Alexandria Restaurant Partners announced in a press release that Ada’s on the River (3 Pioneer Mill Way) will open next Thursday with dinner reservations currently available.

BREAKING: Governor Declares Curfew in Alexandria and State of Emergency

At the request of the City of Alexandria, Gov. Ralph Northam announced that a 6 p.m.-6 a.m. curfew and state of emergency are in effect in Alexandria and neighboring Arlington.

At the request of @AlexandriaVAGov and @ArlingtonVA, I am declaring a 6PM to 6AM curfew in these jurisdictions, with limited exceptions.

Two Arrested After West End Bar Fight

Two Fairfax County men were arrested last month and charged with drunkenness, resisting arrest and assault and battery after a fight at a West End bar.

On Dec. 11, police arrived at the Hashtag Restaurant & Lounge at 654 South Pickett Street and found the 23-year-old and 22-year-old men with swollen knuckles and welts on their faces. Both men were highly intoxicated and told police that they were assaulted while they fought by bar security staff and a bartender.

Alexandria’s Initial and Continued Unemployment Claims Keep Going Down

Alexandria’s initial and continued unemployment claims continued their decline for the week ending Dec. 26.

The Virginia Employment Commission reports that there were 1,167 continued claims in Alexandria for the week ending Dec. 26, a 5% drop from the previous week’s total of 1,223 claims. That’s the lowest number of continued claims since the week ending April 4, which saw 1,710 claims.
