COVID-19 Update: Cases Jump to 899, No New Deaths in Alexandria

There are now 899 probable and positive cases of COVID-19 in Alexandria, an increase of 51 cases since yesterday.

While no new deaths have been announced, the rise in new or probable cases is the largest since the first case was diagnosed on March 11. There have been COVID-19-related 26 deaths in Alexandria, the most recent of which were reported yesterday and were a man his his 50s and a man in his 70s, according to the Virginia Department of Health.

Most fatalities related to the virus have been people over the age of 50, although the highest numbers of those infected are in their 30s and 40s. There has been one death of a person in their 20s.

Here’s the age breakdown of deaths and new cases in the city:

• 80+     —10 Deaths, 44 cases, 16 hospitalizations (Seven new cases)
• 70-79 — Seven deaths, 52 cases, 22 hospitalizations (Seven new cases)
• 60-69 — One death, 81 cases, 18 hospitalizations (Four new cases, one new hospitalization)
• 50-59 — Seven deaths, 121 cases, 23 hospitalizations (Six new cases)
• 40-49 — Zero deaths, 172 cases, 14 hospitalizations (Six new cases)-
• 30-39 — Zero deaths, 223 cases, 13 hospitalizations (16 new cases)
• 20-29 — One death, 122 cases, two hospitalizations (Seven new cases)
• 10-19  — Zero deaths, 46 cases (Three new cases)
• 0-9     — Zero deaths, 37 cases, one hospitalization (Three new cases)

There have been 352 new or probable cases in the city in the last 10 days alone.

VDH also broke down the caseload by race, and disclosed the following:

• White, non-Hispanic residents — 17 deaths, 318 cases, 43 hospitalizations (19 new cases)
• Black/African American residents — Four deaths, 135 cases, 32 hospitalizations (Eight new cases, One new hospitalization)
• Not reported — Four deaths, 292 cases, 12 hospitalizations 292 (Five new cases)
• Other — One death, 146 cases, 21 hospitalizations (19 new cases)

The Alexandria Health Department is currently asking VDH for a more data. The city’s Health Director Dr. Stephen Haering initially refused to release any information related to COVID-positive patients and fatalities, and more data has steadily been released to the public over the last month.

Yesterday, the health department released that more than half of COVID-19 deaths in the city occurred at long-term care facilities. The department disclosed that 58% of fatalities occurred at the facilities.

There have been 465 females (with 12 deaths and 49 hospitalizations) and 432 males (with 14 deaths and 60 hospitalizations) who tested positive for COVID-19 in the city, and the sex of two COVID-19 patients has not been released. It is not clear how many people have recovered.

VDH also reported that there are 109 COVID-19-related hospitalizations in Alexandria,

Statewide, there have been 660 reported deaths, which is an increase of 35 deaths since yesterday, according to VDH. There are now 18,671 cases (17,873 confirmed, 798 probable) and 2,627 hospitalizations (including 14 probable cases). Additionally, 119,065 tests have been administered in Virginia.
