Two More COVID-19 Deaths, Cases Reach 848 in Alexandria

Two more people have died of COVID-19 in Alexandria and there are 46 new or probable cases in the city since yesterday.

The two most recent deaths were a man in his 70s and a man in his 50s.

There are now 26 deaths related to the virus, and there are now 848 cases of COVID-19 in Alexandria, according to the Virginia Department of Health.

Most fatalities related to the virus have been people over the age of 50, although the highest numbers of those infected are in their 30s and 40s. There has been one death of a person in their 20s.

Here’s the age breakdown of deaths and new cases in the city:

• 80+     —10 Deaths, 37 cases, 16 hospitalizations (Four new cases)
• 70-79 — Seven deaths, 45 cases, 22 hospitalizations (One new death, four new cases)
• 60-69 — One death, 77 cases, 17 hospitalizations (Three new cases)
• 50-59 — Six deaths, 115 cases, 23 hospitalizations (One new death, one new case)
• 40-49 — Zero deaths, 166 cases, 14 hospitalizations (12 new cases)
• 30-39 — Zero deaths, 207 cases, 13 hospitalizations (Eight new cases)
• 20-29 — One death, 115 cases, two hospitalizations (Nine new cases)
• 10-19  — Zero deaths, 43 cases (Six new cases)
• 0-9     — Zero deaths, 34 cases, one hospitalization (Two new cases)

There have been 340 new or probable cases in the city in the last 10 days alone.

VDH also broke down the caseload by race, and disclosed the following:

• White, non-Hispanic residents — 17 deaths, 299 cases, 43 hospitalizations
• Black/African American residents — Four deaths, 135 cases, 32 hospitalizations
• Not reported — Four deaths, 287 cases, 12 hospitalizations
• Other — One death, 127 cases, 21 hospitalizations

The Alexandria Health Department is currently asking VDH for a more specific racial breakdown. The city’s Health Director Dr. Stephen Haering initially refused to release any information related to COVID-positive patients and fatalities, and more data has steadily been released to the public over the last month.

There have been 435 females (with 12 deaths and 49 hospitalizations) and 411 males (with 14 deaths and 59 hospitalizations) who tested positive for COVID-19 in the city, and it is not clear how many people have recovered. VDH also reported that there are 108 COVID-19-related hospitalizations in Alexandria.

Statewide, there have been 616 reported deaths, which is an increase of 35 deaths since yesterday, according to VDH. There are now 17,731 cases (16,979 confirmed, 752 probable) and 2,519 hospitalizations (including nine probable cases). Additionally, 112,450 tests have been administered in Virginia.
