It was quite a week in Alexandria.
Hungry? Our top story this week is about Del Ray’s Matt and Tony’s All Day Kitchen + Bar (1501 Mt. Vernon Avenue) making Yelp’s Top 100 Brunch Spots 2024.
Also this week, Mayor Justin Wilson made headlines when he endorsed City Council Member Alyia Gaskins in her bid to succeed him as the city’s chief executive. Gaskins is running against Vice Mayor Amy Jackson and retired real estate developer Steven Peterson. She has also received the endorsements of three out of four City Council Members seeking reelection, leads in fundraising and is the perceived frontrunner in the race.
In his endorsement message, Wilson wrote that the next mayor must have “clear-eyed leadership.”
“Alyia has shown an innate ability to bring together diverse interests in our community to advance progressive policy,” Wilson said. “She works collaboratively with her colleagues to advance investments in our schools, infrastructure, housing and public safety. She champions policies designed to drive economic growth and improve mobility. She advocates for our community in Alexandria and in Richmond.”
The Democrat and Republican primaries for mayor and City Council are June 18.
