An Alexandria judge dismissed a civil contempt charge he previously levied against a local attorney for missing her scheduled court date.
Defense attorney Sameera Ali faced 10 days in jail and a fine for not appearing in Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court on Nov. 19.

New restaurant Zaytoun Halal Grill has filed for a special use permit to replace AJ’s Pizza and Cheesesteak at 5418 Duke Street.

It’s been a busy week after the Thanksgiving break.
There was an exciting series of restaurant announcements this week, including Shake Shack and Baku Delicious, but also the tragic closure announcement for Hooray for Books!.
Old Town bookstore Hooray for Books!, a beloved local spot for children’s books and author signings, announced that it will close for good at the end of this year.
In a message on the bookstore’s website, staff said the shop is fully stocked for the holidays but the store will remain closed in 2025 because the landlord is not extending the bookstore’s lease.
