Popular burger chain Shake Shack has filed for a permit to open a new location at 621 King Street in Old Town.
The proposed location is a prime spot in Old Town right near the intersection of Washington Street and King Street.
The location was formerly a Burke and Herbert bank — and the permit arrives ironically as city staff grapple with whether or not there are too many banks replacing restaurants and other uses in Old Town.
The chain offers a selection of burgers, fries, and the eponymous milkshakes.
“We aim to make our shacks more than a place to eat burgers and fries, but a place for the community to gather safely,” the restaurant said in the application, followed by a breakdown of how few customers gather and eat at the restaurant.
The application said Shake Shack will offer a “digital-forward ordering experience” with most of the orders to-go. The company estimated that 70% of the orders will be to-go, mobile/app pick-up or third-party delivery with 30% or less served for onsite consumption.
The Old Town Shake Shack will be the first in Alexandria, with the next closest ones being in National Harbor and Pentagon City.
