The Washington Post reported that a scheduling conflict could put an Alexandria lawyer behind bars.
Sameera Ali, a local lawyer who agreed to take a case at the court’s request, agreed to take a case where a youth was charged with a felony and two misdemeanors when no other attorneys were available. The Washington post reported that Ali, who is seven months into a high-risk pregnancy, agreed if the preliminary hearing set for Nov. 19 could be rescheduled to accommodate a prior commitment in Fairfax County.
While the Alexandria prosecutor’s office filed court papers in support of Ali’s request and, at the Nov. 19 hearing asked for the delay, Judge Thomas K. Cullen of the Alexandria Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court refused and called on Ali to defend herself from a charge of civil contempt.
Ali faces the possibility of 10 days in jail and a $250 fine. The hearing is scheduled for Monday afternoon (today).
The Washington Post said the Northern Virginia legal community already faces difficulty in finding lawyers to represent clients who cannot afford an attorney and spoke to one attorney who withdrew their name form the list after Ali charged.
Alexandria Commonwealth’s Attorney Bryan Porter told the Washington Post the contempt proceedings were unusual and that he did not think it was appropriate.
