On This Day in Alexandria History — “On Dec. 4, 1971, the T.C. Williams football team won the state championship, shutting out Andrew Lewis of Salem, 27-0, and capping off an undefeated, 13-win season. The high school team was recalled years later in the film, ‘Remember the Titans.'” [Historic Alexandria]

Warner Calls for Hegseth Dismissal — “An objective, evidence-based investigation by the Pentagon’s internal watchdog leaves no doubt: Secretary Hegseth endangered the lives of American pilots based aboard the USS Harry S. Truman as they prepared to launch a mission against terrorist targets,” Sen. Mark Warner (D) said in a statement. “By sharing classified operational details on an unsecure group chat on his personal phone, he created unacceptable risks to their safety and to our operational security.” [Sen. On This Day in Alexandria History — “On Dec. 3, 1789, the Virginia General Assembly ceded ten square miles of territory in the Northeast portion of the state for the proposed seat of the Federal government. The land, including much of Alexandria and what is now known as Arlington County, was to be joined with a larger parcel across the Potomac River ceded by the State of Maryland, for the new District of Columbia. Although Alexandrians supported the move, expecting the local economy to boom, over time they were disappointed with the initiative and petitioned Congress to reverse the measure. In 1846, Congress finally authorized that the Virginia lands be retroceded to the state the following year.” [Historic Alexandria]

On This Day in Alexandria History — “On Dec. 1, 1742, Prince William County divided to establish Fairfax County. When it was founded in 1749, Alexandria was part of Fairfax County.” [Historic Alexandria]

Historic Lighthouse Repairs Coming Next Year — “A 2014 NPS report describes the exterior of the [Jones Point] lighthouse as in ‘good condition’ with restoration needed for the interior … Thirteen years later, no additional major restoration projects have been undertaken at the site, according to Jerry Garcia, NPS chief of staff for the George Washington Memorial Parkway. However, help will soon be coming for the winded structure. Garcia explained that a comprehensive repair project with a ‘majority focus’ on the exterior of the lighthouse building will begin in 2026.” [The Alexandria Times]

On This Day in Alexandria History — “On Nov. 28, 1946, President and Mrs. Harry Truman attended Thanksgiving Day worship services at historic Christ Church, just days after issuing a pardon to a turkey at the White House. In his Thanksgiving proclamation that year, he asked that ‘we have the vision and courage to accept and discharge honorably the responsibilities inherent in our strength by consecrating ourselves to the attainment of a better world.’ Presidential visits to Christ Church have been a longstanding tradition for over two centuries, begun on July 4, 1793 when George Washington first attended services there as President of the United States.” [Historic Alexandria]

Old Town Restaurant Closing This Weekend — Owners Ralph Davis and son Matt Davis “recently announced that they are closing their eatery at 220 N. Lee St. in Old Town. The final day the restaurant will be open is Sunday, Nov. 30. Ralph Davis is a legendary restaurateur in Alexandria, known mainly for his ownership and management of RT’s Restaurant for 32 years but also for his hand in many others in Old Town and Arlington. Mount Vernon Reopens After $40M Renovations — “For first time since January 2024, George Washington’s Mount Vernon has re-opened all first and second-floor Mansion rooms to the public. The reopening comes just in time for holiday events, including  Mount Vernon by Candlelight when visitors can step back in time with a 45-minute candlelit tour of the estate as we celebrate the build-up to the 250th anniversary of American Independence.” [Alexandria Living Magazine]

Volunteers Remove 500-Pound Junk From Trail — “Removing a 500lb + piece of trash is not an easy feat. Watch how we slowly removed it from the trail over the course of 2 weeks.
