Baltimore woman arrested as two suspects flee from brazen Old Town yoga store theft

A 33-year-old Baltimore woman was arrested earlier this month after allegedly stealing thousands of dollars worth of apparel from a yoga apparel store in Old Town.

The suspect was captured on security camera footage with two suspects taking approximately $8,000 worth of merchandise out of Alo at 814 King Street on Dec. 10. The woman was arrested attempting to enter a getaway vehicle as two others suspects fled on foot and were not arrested, according to an Alexandria Police Department announcement yesterday (Thursday).

Yesterday’s APD announcement comes as the department investigates a string of thefts from yoga apparel stores in Old Town. The suspect was arrested by a member of APD’s Alexandria Tourism Oriented Policing Unit (ATOP), created last month as part of the department’s holiday crime prevention efforts.

“This is the plan at work,” Police Chief Tarrick McGuire said in the release. “Day in and day out, our officers are applying evidenced-based strategies and building relationships with our business community to prevent crime.”

An APD description of the incident is below.

On Wednesday, December 10, an ATOP officer assigned to holiday crime operations on King Street was monitoring an APD public safety camera in real-time when he observed suspicious activity inside ALO, the Yoga retail store. A woman who was wearing a face mask aggressively approached a store employee and moved into proximity to the employee’s face. He saw three women exit the store with arms full of clothing and merchandise valued at approximately $8,000. The ATOP officer immediately responded to the area and encountered one of the suspects as she attempted to enter a vehicle to flee.

The suspect was charged with robbery with force, a Class 5 felony punishable by one-to-10 years in prison, or up to a year in prison and/or a $2,500 fine.

She was released on Dec. 11 on a $1,000 unsecured bond, according to the Alexandria Sheriff’s Office. Her arraignment is on Jan. 14.
