APD launches ‘crime prevention plan’ to improve safety during the holidays

The Alexandria Police Department is rolling out a targeted effort to deter crime during the holiday season, as citywide crimes continue to trend downward

APD’s Holiday Crime Prevention Plan, which began last Friday, involves “high-visibility patrols, targeted enforcement, community engagement” and technology in an attempt to “deter seasonal increases in theft, robbery, larceny and traffic-related offenses.”

Through Jan. 1, 2026, residents can expect an increased police presence across retail corridors, shopping centers and grocery stores, business districts, transit areas and high-density residential communities, according to the department.

At these locations, officers will “conduct foot and mobile patrols, with cruiser steady-burn lights” to increase visibility.

The plan also entails “targeted enforcement” in places where larcenies, robberies and other crimes “typically rise” during the holidays.

“These locations include retail corridors in downtown Alexandria and Potomac Yards and highly densely populated residential areas throughout the three sectors of the city,” APD spokesperson Rebekka Heite told ALXnow via email. “These areas are identified through analysis of calls for service, reported crime, crash data and intelligence trends.”

Increased enforcement in these areas will entail the following personnel and tools.

  • K9 officers
  • Criminal Investigations staff
  • Surveillance and “fugitive apprehension teams”
  • Public safety cameras and real-time monitoring
  • FLOCK license plate recognition technology
  • Proactive traffic enforcement and message boards

Businesses, community organizations and neighborhood associations can also expect increased communication and engagement from APD through January, including efforts from the department to “gather feedback throughout the season.”

The department shared the following holiday safety tips for residents.

  • Protect package deliveries: Use secure delivery lockers, track packages, or arrange for a trusted neighbor to collect them
  • Stay alert: Avoid distractions when walking to or from your vehicle; stay in well-lit areas; have your keys ready
  • Protect your vehicle: Always lock your car, remove valuables, and never leave your vehicle running and unattended
  • Report suspicious activities: Call 911 in case of an emergency. For non-emergencies, call 703-746-4444
