After three years in a row of rising crime in Alexandria, it’s finally trending in the right direction.

Part 1 crimes, or crimes against people, include homicide, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny and auto theft. There were 1,133 total Part I incidents from Jan. 1 to April 30 this year, a decrease of 23%, according to the Alexandria Police Department Crime Dashboard.

The figures aren’t completely set in stone, as the shooting death of a 19-year-old man in April hasn’t been officially ruled a homicide. There have also been two rape cases this year, and none up to this point in 2024, although there were nine total rape cases last year.

Larcenies are by far the most frequent Part I crime in Alexandria. Last month, APD announced a 60-day initiative to combat shoplifting, and Police Chief Tarrick McGuire’s crime reduction strategy includes focusing on six crime hotspots in the city.

Below are Alexandria’s year-to-date Part I crime statistics for 2024 and 2025.
