On This Day in Alexandria History — On November 21, 1947, the Alexandria Traffic Board lifted the limit of the number of cabs that could operate in the City. Earlier in the year, the Traffic Board had permitted only 150 cabs to operate until the results of a survey could be analyzed. [Historic Alexandria]
Advocates Brace for ACA Expiration — “The ACA’s enhanced premium tax credits have made coverage more affordable for millions since 2021. In Virginia, roughly 400,000 people use the marketplace, and as many as 100,000 could fall off their plans if the credits expire. Health-care leaders have called the potential fallout “a bit of a tsunami,” warning that premiums could rise 30% to 50% next year.” [Virginia Mercury]

On This Day in Alexandria History — “On Nov. 20, 1818, the Alexandria Common Council authorized space in the new City Hall and Market House for an Alexandria Museum. The space, located on the second floor corner of the building overlooking Cameron and N. Royal Streets, was operated by the local Masonic Lodge and was the site of many important public receptions overs the years, including one for the Marquis de Lafayette who visited Alexandria for a month in 1824.” [Historic Alexandria]

On This Day in Alexandria History — “On Nov. 17, 1927, a devastating tornado ripped through Alexandria, injuring dozens of people and causing half million dollars in damage. The front façade of Jackson Hotel on King Street was torn away and some displaced families were temporarily sheltered at the almshouse in Del Ray … The path of the tornado spread over 17 miles long with a width ranging from 20 to over 300 yards. Witnesses described the sound of the wind as ‘a huge waterfall.’ Fortunately there were no fatalities, but 32 people were injured in the unusual weather event.” [Historic Alexandria]
