A Maryland woman has been arrested following a pursuit to recover a stolen vehicle that left one Virginia State Police (VSP) trooper with injuries last night (Monday).
The pursuit began around 11:47 p.m. after a trooper attempted to stop a stolen vehicle in Alexandria, VSP said in an announcement today (Tuesday). The suspect, 24-year-old Naturi Michon Hayes, allegedly kept driving.
The chase went from Route 1 southbound onto Interstate 495 eastbound, where a second trooper joined the first. The suspect vehicle “then rammed the initial trooper,” causing the trooper’s vehicle to crash into a guardrail near Exit 3A, authorities said.
The chase continued into Maryland.
“Troopers pursued the vehicle through Prince George’s County and then into Howard County where the driver crashed in the area of Washington Boulevard and Meadowridge Road,” Maryland State Police wrote. “Hayes then fled on foot and was arrested by troopers without incident.”
Maryland State Police and U.S. Park Police took Hayes into custody. She was transported to a hospital and then to the Prince George’s Department of Corrections.
The struck trooper was also taken to a nearby hospital for injuries and was released this morning.
Hayes, of Elkridge, has been charged in Maryland with first-degree assault, attempt by a driver to elude uniformed police, failure to stop after an accident involving damage, aggressive and reckless driving, and other traffic-related charges.
Charges against the suspect are pending in Virginia.
