SoberRide, the initiative that has been offering free Lyft rides home in the D.C. area this holiday season, will continue to operate for New Year’s Eve.
Rides will become available starting at 10 p.m. tonight (Wednesday) and lasting until 4 a.m. tomorrow. During that period, residents 21 and older can enter a promotional code into Lyft’s “Payment” tab to receive a ride home. Tonight’s promotional code will be posted at 9 p.m. on www.SoberRide.com.
The nonprofit Washington Regional Alcohol Program operates SoberRide during holidays and celebratory times throughout the year in hopes of curbing drunk driving.
This year’s holiday program has been in effect since Dec. 19, offering complimentary rides totaling up to $15 on a nightly basis.
“Well over a third of all U.S. traffic fatalities during New Year’s in 2023 involved drunk drivers, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration,” said WRAP President Kurt Erickson in a press release.
Last New Year’s Eve, SoberRide provided rides to 1,115 people throughout the D.C. area, according to WRAP.
