Free Lyft rides are returning to Alexandria and the D.C. area starting this Friday and lasting through New Year’s Day.
Lyft rides totaling up to $15 will be available free of charge from 10 p.m.-4 a.m. nightly through Thursday, Jan. 1. The rides are courtesy of the Washington Regional Alcohol Program’s SoberRide initiative, which aims to combat drunk driving.
Residents can find WRAP’s promotional codes at 9 p.m. Dec. 19 and Dec. 31 by visiting www.SoberRide.com. Participants are instructed to enter the codes under the app’s “Payment” tab.
The winter holiday season is traditionally a “high-risk” time for drunk driving incidents, WRAP said in a press release. Over one-third of traffic deaths during Christmas and New Year’s Day in the United States involve drunk drivers, according to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Last December, 2,202 people in the region utilized SoberRide, which is also offered during holidays like St. Patrick’s Day and Cinco de Mayo. The program has provided nearly 100,000 free rides since its inception in 1991.
