It’s been an interesting workweek in Alexandria, even with Christmas landing on Wednesday this year.
The week was still full of news.
On Sunday night, a man was shot multiple times in the lobby of an apartment building in Old Town. Police arrested the suspect, and also found a gun hidden in bushes near the scene. The suspect was charged with malicious wounding and is being held without bond.
Also on Sunday night, eight people were displaced, but there were no injuries after a fire in a West End apartment complex.
On Monday, Inova-GoHealth Urgent Care opened at 4600 Kenmore Avenue in the Seminary Plaza shopping center, and it’s the ninth center to open this year in Virginia. The center treats patients ages six months and older for non-life-threatening health concerns, including “COVID-19, flu, fever, asthma, allergies, minor cuts, burns, pink eye, urinary tract infections, fractures, sprains, strains and more,” according to Inova.
Our top story this week was about a felonious assault on Christmas Day in the city’s Potomac West neighborhood. A man suffered a non-life threatening head injury in a gang attack, and said that at least six suspects in ski masks and dark clothing attempted to break into his apartment.
On the lighter side of things, we reported on the Alexandria School Board voting last week to start a naming process for the Alexandria City High School Minnie Howard Campus athletic field complex. The Board unanimously approved directing the superintendent to start the process by putting former Mayor Kerry Donley’s name at the top of a list.

In case you missed it, Alexandria’s annual First Night celebration is next Tuesday, Dec. 31. There are dozens of performances at multiple Old Town venues for the family friendly, alcohol-free New Year’s celebration. There’s even an early fireworks show on the waterfront at 6 p.m. if you want to get the kids home early.
