Freezing winter weather and a light dusting of snow is expected in Alexandria on Christmas Eve (Tuesday, Dec. 24).
The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for Alexandria, Arlington and Falls Church for Tuesday. NWS predicts moderate severity with freezing rain.
“Freezing rain expected,” NWS said in the advisory. “Total ice accumulation of a light glaze to a few hundredths of an inch of snow is possible.”
NWS said that roads and bridges and overpasses will become hazardous and slick.
The advisory is in effect from 5 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday.
According to NWS:
Precipitation begins as light freezing rain early Tuesday morning along and west of US-15, then begins along the Interstate 95 corridor around or just before sunrise. Some snow could mix in at times, though that is most likely along and north of Interstate 70.
Precipitation transitions to a mix of rain and freezing rain late Tuesday morning, before coming to an end early Tuesday afternoon.
The weather on Christmas Day (Wednesday) is expected to be partly sunny during the day with a high near 43 degrees and cloudy in the evening with a low of 31 degrees.
