Any regulars at some of Alexandria’s most popular recreation centers might have to take next week off.
Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities (RPCA) said the following recreation centers will be closed from Monday, Aug. 12, through Sunday, Aug. 18:

An event tomorrow (Thursday) will honor Benjamin Thomas and reflect on his lynching in Alexandria 125 years ago. This year, the event will also highlight the aftermath of the lynching in Alexandria.
The event is being held at 6:30 p.m. at Shiloh Baptist Worship Center (1401 Jamieson Avenue) though a release from the City of Alexandria notes that it will be a secular event. 125 years ago, the church was the site of meeting after Thompson’s murder to both honor his memory and protest against the lynching.
Salon Kate & Spa, one of the businesses making an exodus from the soon-to-close Montgomery Center, has managed to find a new location not too far away.
The salon, owned by beauty stylist Kate Walters, opened in the Montgomery Center six years ago. The salon will reopen at 1064 N. Fayette Street — near the Yates Car Wash, McDonalds, and soon the Continues arcade bar — with a grand re-opening party on Saturday, Sept. 14 from 1-3 p.m.
Come celebrate the 250th anniversary of America’s War for Independence with renowned music historians David & Ginger Hildebrand for performances of special period music. The Hildebrands will don period attire to discuss and perform music associated with Alexandria’s sister cities: Caen, France; Dundee, Scotland; Helsingborg, Sweden; and Gyumri, Armenia. Scottish music was especially influential in the American colonies, and once the French joined the Revolutionary cause there were musical celebrations for Generals LaFayette, Rochambeau and other French leaders. This concert event is part of the “Alexandria commemorates America’s 250” campaign. David & Ginger specialize in researching, recording, and performing early American music. Since 1980 they have presented concerts and educational programs throughout the country and abroad at museums, historic sites, schools and universities. After years of food trucks, Port City Brewing Company is getting its first fully-fledged restaurant: La Tingeria.
The Alexandria location at 3950 Wheeler Avenue will be the third for La Tingeria, which also has spots in Falls Church and Spotsylvania. The taqueria is expected to open at Port City in October.

Alexandria childcare nonprofit The Campagna Center coming together with a few partners to host a back-to-school health fair to help families in need.
The fair aims to help preschool-age children from families at 100-200% of the federal poverty level. The health fair will run from Wednesday, Aug. 14 through Friday, Aug. 16 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Campagna Center headquarters (418 S. Washington Street).
