Free sandbags available to help Alexandrians brace for Tropical Storm Debby

It’s no secret that Alexandria has flooding problems, and the City of Alexandria is giving free sandbags to residents and businesses this morning for those preparing for the remnants of Tropical Storm Debby.

According to a release:

In anticipation of several days of heavy rain, the City will provide free sandbags to residents and businesses tomorrow, August 7 at the following locations:

  • Intersection of Commonwealth Avenue and East Glebe Road from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
  • Intersection of Union Street and Prince Street from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
  • 133 South Quaker Lane from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Sandbags are distributed on a first-come, first-served basis with a limit of five per address. Proof of residency or business in Alexandria is required.

The National Weather Service said scattered showers are expected this morning, with showers and thunderstorms incoming after 2 p.m.

Rain is expected to continue through Thursday and Friday before letting up on Saturday — one day earlier than previous forecasts.
