It was a picturesque day in Old Town for Alexandria’s 42nd annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade.
Temperatures were crisp in the 60s, as King Street near City Hall was awash in orange, green and white.
Chocolate lovers in Del Ray are in for some disappointing news. Dolce and Bean, a beloved local chocolate shop, is set to close its doors this spring.
The Del Ray Business Association (DRBA) shared the news on Instagram on Friday, February 28, expressing sadness over the upcoming closure of one of the area’s most popular businesses.
Come celebrate the 250th anniversary of America’s War for Independence with renowned music historians David & Ginger Hildebrand for performances of special period music. The Hildebrands will don period attire to discuss and perform music associated with Alexandria’s sister cities: Caen, France; Dundee, Scotland; Helsingborg, Sweden; and Gyumri, Armenia. Scottish music was especially influential in the American colonies, and once the French joined the Revolutionary cause there were musical celebrations for Generals LaFayette, Rochambeau and other French leaders. This concert event is part of the “Alexandria commemorates America’s 250” campaign. David & Ginger specialize in researching, recording, and performing early American music. Since 1980 they have presented concerts and educational programs throughout the country and abroad at museums, historic sites, schools and universities. Mount Vernon, The National Gallery of Art, The National Archives, and Colonial Williamsburg are among their many past sponsors.

It’s been a busy week in Alexandria, especially with the grand opening of the Virginia Tech Innovation Campus today and a brief derailment by a protest against Virginia Tech’s ties to defense contractors like BAE Systems and Boeing.

After years of planning and construction, Alexandria’s Virginia Tech Innovation Campus in Potomac Yard celebrated a grand opening today (Friday).
The Virginia Tech campus broke ground in 2021 and opened to students in January. A three-building campus is planned, with the first building coming online being an 11-story, 300,000-square-foot academic building that visitors toured today as part of the grand opening.
Today, Alexandria’s Market Square is an Old Town landmark, one that could become even better with a new planned overhaul, but that beauty belies a dark past a new grant could help uncover.
Beyond just being the center for one of the country’s oldest farmers’ market held continuously at the same site, Market Square was also deeply connected to the city’s history of slavery. A $75,000 Commonwealth History Fund grant from the Virginia Museum of History and Culture (VMHC) will fund a research project to better explore and explain Market Square’s history.

A celebration of the Virginia Tech Innovation Campus opening today in Potomac Yard was derailed when protests started shortly after Governor Glenn Youngkin arrived.
Protestors stood from the audience and approached the stage singing “Ain’t Gonna Study War No More”.
