Zebra reported that Cornerstone Craftsman, a new nonprofit dedicated to teaching Alexandria teens trade skills, celebrated a grand opening on Friday of its new Eisenhower Avenue home.

Cornerstone Craftsman offers mentoring and training for children ages 12-17 with a focus on providing an alternative to gang-related violence, substance abuse and more.

“Our students meet with our instructors/mentors twice a month during the school year and more frequently during the summer at Cornerstone Craftsman’s Learning Center at 2111 Eisenhower Avenue to complete hands-on projects, master technical lessons and advance in the skilled trades,” the program’s website said.

The opening on Friday was attended by Alexandria Mayor Alyia Gaskins, Sheriff Sean Casey and others. Zebra reported that Gaskins said she’s seen an impact first-hand on the lives of mentees already and praised the organization’s mentees for their community impact.
