After years in development, the School Board will vote Thursday night on a new logo for Alexandria City Public Schools, and Superintendent Melanie Kay-Wyatt is recommending Logo 1, according to a staff presentation.

“After careful consideration by the ACPS leadership team and consideration of the community input, the superintendent recommends that the School Board accept Logo 1 as the new logo and brand to represent Alexandria City Public Schools,” ACPS said in the presentation. “Some logo elements may be refined when finalizing the final logo version.”


From the National Science Foundation to Del Ray weather gurus, there’s a bevy of scientific talent in Alexandria, and Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS) is hoping some can help pass that love of science on to the next generation.

ACPS said volunteers are needed to judge projects at the ACPS Science and Engineering fair at the Alexandria City High School’s King Street campus (3330 King Street) on Jan. 25.


Virginia Tech’s Potomac Yard campus has hit a snag and won’t open until spring 2025.

Project delays have become a local tradition around Potomac Yard. The school said the new Virginia Tech Innovation Campus will open in 2025 rather than later this year, as was planned when the project broke ground in 2021.


The National Weather Service warned that even after snow tapers off around noon today, winds are expected to pick up and temperatures could drop.

In a Special Weather Statement, the National Weather Service said slick spots should be expected on some local roadways, even after the snowing stops.


The Alexandria Health Department (AHD) said anyone traveling through two of the nearby airports earlier this month may have been exposed to measles.

The AHD shared a warning sent by the Virginia Health Department.

Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS) announced at 6:15 p.m. on Monday that schools and offices would be closed on Tuesday, with students getting a ‘traditional snow day’ rather than switching to virtual learning.

After previously considering switching to virtual classes on any school days that might be closed due to snow, the ACPS website noted that the school division would also consider having some snow days off for students and teachers.


The bright news is: something managed to dispalced Potomac Yard and crime as the number one story of the week.

The big story of the week was plans to replace Ross Dress for Less with The Linder Academy, a private school that opened at 607 S. Washington Street in 2021.


The Alexandria Police Department (APD) announced that Kory Anding, a 28-year-old man who allegedly struck his roommate in the head with a machete, has been arrested.

The incident occurred in the 5400 block of North Morgan Street near Lincolnia on Dec. 23.


(Updated at 1/13) The Alexandria Police Department is investigating two recent swatting calls within a week. In both fake 911 calls, a male admitted to a terrible shooting crime, prompting a significant police response.

On 11:25 p.m. on Sunday (Jan. 8), a male told a 911 dispatcher that he “accidentally” shot his brother in the chest after playing with their father’s gun.
