On This Day in Alexandria History — “On the morning of February 13, 1855, Alexandrians awoke to find the Potomac River frozen solid for miles up and down the river. Although all navigation ceased, townspeople that were brave enough were able to walk to the Maryland shore and back again.” [Historic Alexandria]

‘Innovation District’ Launches in Nat’l Landing — “A new ‘innovation district’ seeking to promote public-private partnerships has launched in Crystal City, Pentagon City and Potomac Yard. The National Innovation Quarter, or ‘National IQ,’ promises ‘to solve the most pressing challenges at the intersection of national competitiveness and technology,’ according to a press release.” [ARLnow]

On This Day in Alexandria History — “Alexandria celebrates African American heritage every month of the year, but before there was a designated Black History Month, Black History Week was started in 1926 by Dr. Carter G. Woodson to commemorate the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln on February 12th, and Frederick Douglass on February 14th. In many black communities, these birthdays were already commemorated in the years between 1865 and 1926. Black History Week evolved into Black History Month in 1976.” [Historic Alexandria]

On This Day in Alexandria History — “On February 10, 1957, congregation leaders, including Mayor Leroy S. Bendheim, laid the cornerstone at Beth El’s new synagogue on Seminary Road. First established in 1859 and the oldest Reform congregation in Northern Virginia, Beth El Hebrew Congregation had previously worshipped at a synagogue on North Washington Street from 1871 to 1954.” [Historic Alexandria]

It’s Election Day — “Polling places across the city will be open from 6 a.m.-7 p.m. tomorrow. The City Hall precinct will be moving to Lyles-Crouch Traditional Academy at 530 S. St. Asaph Street, according to the Office of Voter Registration and Elections. Sample ballots are available to view on the city’s website. After 7 p.m., results are expected to be published on the state’s elections website.” [ALXnow]

On This Day in Alexandria History — “On February 9, 1862, Rev. K.J. Stewart of St. Paul’s Church was arrested by Union troops for omitting a prayer for President Abraham Lincoln during services. Within a couple months, St. Paul’s was converted into use as a Union hospital.” [Historic Alexandria]

Walk for Peace Happening Today — “The Walk for Peace is expected to enter Alexandria on the morning of Monday, Feb. 9 and will proceed northbound along George Washington Parkway. Intermittent lane closures along George Washington Parkway is expected, and traffic will be impacted. Expect delays, alter travel plans, and have an alternate route planned.
