City Facilities Closed, Waste Collection Slides — “Waste will not be collected in Alexandria tomorrow (Tuesday) as city offices, courts, facilities, libraries and public schools plan to remain closed another day due to icy, inclement weather.” [ALXnow]

Snow Removal in Progress — As of 7 p.m. Monday, Alexandria’s primary roads are 100% passable, while secondary, intermediate and residential roads still require snow removal. Check the snow report tool to see the latest road conditions. [City of Alexandria]

On This Day in Alexandria History — “On Jan. 26, 1937, the Alexandria City Council approved a proposal by Dr. Robert South Barrett who offered to provide funds to the City to erect a public library in memory of his mother, Dr. Kate Waller Barrett. Previously, the Alexandria Library was a private subscription library with subscribers paying an annual membership fee.” [Historic Alexandria]

City Services, Facilities Closed — “DASH and DOT Paratransit have canceled all services for Monday, according to announcements from both systems. DASH’s service cancellation is the system’s first in years, it said, and comes as Alexandria’s public schools, libraries, government offices, facilities and trash collection have announced Monday closures and cancellations.” [ALXnow]

On This Day in Alexandria History — “On Jan. 23, 1866 an act was passed by City Council to establish a paid City Fire Department for Alexandria. For over a century, fire was a constant threat to Alexandria and even one forgotten candle could develop into a major conflagration involving dozens of homes and businesses.” [Historic Alexandria]

Several Inches of Snow Predicted in Region — “Chances are increasing that the D.C. area will experience one of its biggest winter storms in years between late Saturday and early Monday. The snow and perhaps ice, accompanied by bitter and long-lasting cold, could cause major disruptions to schools, airports and businesses Sunday into next week. On This Day in Alexandria History — “On Jan. 21, 1852, the Potomac River was entirely frozen over between Virginia and Maryland. People came to Alexandria from Fort Washington and points further south by traveling across the frozen river, as though it were a road.” [Historic Alexandria]

McPike Wins Firehouse Primary — “City Councilman R. Kirk McPike has been declared the winner in Tuesday’s Democratic firehouse primary to succeed outgoing Del. Elizabeth Bennett-Parker (D-5). On This Day in Alexandria History — “On Jan. 20, 1942, the Alexandria City Council authorized the purchase of an ambulance for first time. Alexandria’s first ambulance was acquired in the 1930s, but it had been paid for with donations, after members of the Potomac Truck and Engine Company, which had organized the first rescue squad in Alexandria, raised money to purchase one.” [Historic Alexandria]

Spanberger Sworn Into Office — “Amid a cold drizzle, Democrat Abigail Spanberger was sworn into office Saturday at the state Capitol as Virginia’s first female governor after centuries of men holding the state’s top office.” [Associated Press]
