Early voting in Alexandria begins Friday for City Council special election

Alexandria voters can begin casting early ballots this Friday to participate in the city’s April 21 special election.

This includes the City Council race and a proposed constitutional amendment to redraw Virginia’s congressional maps.

Starting Friday, in-person early voting will be available at the Office of Voter Registration & Elections (132 N. Royal Street, Suite 100) from 8 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday through Friday, as well as on some dates with additional or extended hours, which are listed below.

  • Saturday, April 11, 8 a.m.-5 p.m.
  • Sunday, April 12, 11 a.m.-3 p.m.
  • Monday, April 13, 8 a.m.-7 p.m.
  • Tuesday, April 14, 8 a.m.-7 p.m.
  • Wednesday, April 15, 8 a.m.-7 p.m.
  • Thursday, April 16, 8 a.m.-7 p.m.
  • Friday, April 17, 8 a.m.-5 p.m.
  • Saturday, April 18, 8 a.m.-5 p.m.

The deadline to cast an early, in-person vote is 5 p.m. Saturday, April 18.

Three candidates — Democrat Sandy Marks, independent and former Republican City Councilman Frank Fannon, and independent Alison O’Connell — are running to fill the vacated seat of Del. R. Kirk McPike (D-5), who was recently sworn into the Virginia General Assembly.

The statewide referendum, meanwhile, asks voters whether to allow a constitutional amendment for mid-decade congressional redistricting. Democratic Virginia lawmakers are pursuing the amendment as a response to redrawn maps in other states that give Republicans an advantage.

Voters planning to cast a ballot by mail must send an application to the Office of Voter Registration & Elections by 5 p.m. Friday, April 10. Applications can be accessed in the following ways, according to the city.

  • By visiting vote.elections.virginia.gov to submit an application online.
  • By downloading the application available on the City’s Elections webpage.
  • By calling Voter Registration & Elections at 703.746.4050 to request an application to be mailed to you.

Completed mail ballots are due back to the Office of Voter Registration & Elections by 7 p.m. on Election Day, April 21. Ballots postmarked by April 21 and received in the office by noon on Friday, April 24 will also be counted.

On Election Day, ballot dropboxes will be available at all polling locations from 6 a.m.-7 p.m. Additionally, a 24-hour dropbox monitored by video surveillance is located outside the Office of Voter Registration & Elections, and will accept ballots through 7 p.m. Election Day.

The deadline to register to vote or update an existing registration is Tuesday, April 14, after which the same-day registration period begins.

Election information, voter registration requirements, sample ballots, precinct maps and more are available on the city’s elections webpage.
