BREAKING: Another Death as COVID-19 Cases Jump to 700 in Alexandria

Another person has died and there are now 700 Cases of COVID-19 in Alexandria, an increase of 47 cases since yesterday, according to the Virginia Department of Health.

That is the largest jump in new or probable cases since the first case was announced in the city on March 11, and the city is asking residents to continue to stay home except for essential trips to the pharmacy, doctor or grocery store.

There are now 21 COVID-19-related fatalities in Alexandria, and the most recent death was a male in his 80s. All fatalities related to the virus have been people over the age of 50, although the highest percentage of those infected are in their 30s and 40s.

Here’s the age breakdown of new cases in the city:

  • 80+     — Seven deaths, 34 cases (One new death, three new cases)
  • 70-79 — Six deaths, 43 cases (One new case)
  • 60-69 — One death, 70 cases (One new case)
  • 50-59 — Six deaths, 102 cases (Seven new cases)
  • 40-49 — Zero deaths, 133 cases (12 new cases)
  • 30-39 — Zero deaths, 168 cases (13 new cases)
  • 20-29 — One death, 89 cases (Three new cases)
  • 10-19  — Zero deaths, 34 cases (Five new cases)
  • 0-9     — Zero deaths, 24 cases (Two new cases)

There have been 366 females (with nine deaths) and 331 males (with 12 deaths) who tested positive for COVID-19 in the city, and it is not clear how many people have recovered.

VDH also reported that there are 92 COVID-19-related hospitalizations in Alexandria, and there have been 2,460 tests administered.

Statewide, there have been 522 reported deaths, and there are 14,961 cases (14,328 confirmed, 633 probable) and 2,259 hospitalizations (including seven probable cases), according to VDH.

Potomac Harmony is Back! Following a gap year of competing, then virtual rehearsals during the pandemic, followed by the well-earned retirement of our long-term director, a year of a director search, Potomac Harmony hit the regional contest stage in Concord, North Carolina in March for the first time since 2018! It was exhilarating, reaffirming, and rewarding!

The chorus hit all of its goals, the biggest of which was to have fun and sing our best on contest stage — we did both! Because we earned a score over 400 points, our new Director, Allison Lynskey, was awarded the Novice Director award, photo above. Additionally, one of our charter members, Jackie Bottash, was nominated for and honored with the Leadership Excellence award. It was a celebratory weekend!

What’s next? So much! We now look forward to upcoming performances, growing our membership, and expanding our musical product with new arrangements and an education component each week. It’s an exciting time to be part of this ever-growing ensemble!
